  PG Day Chicago 2023 is here! BACKGROUND PG Day events are usually one day or multi-day technical conferences focusing on PostgreSQL and are hosted in a city venue. The purpose of PG Day is to connect PostgreSQL DBAs, users, and developers with informative & educational speakers and sessions in a shared in-person community event. Chicago PUG + PgUS

The United States PostgreSQL Association ( PgUS ) is a nonprofit organization that supports the growth and education of PostgreSQL. PgUS is the sponsor of Chicago PUG . Since we share the same goal, we will work more closely with PgUS  on future initiatives. For starters, we will collaborate with PgUS to update their website ( https://postgresql.us ) with a profile page featuring PostgreSQL User Groups across the nation, including this one. This profile page will include the names, current status (virtual and/or hybrid meetings), meeting schedule (for example, Chicago PUG usually meets once a month on a weekday evening), social media, and contact information of various groups. What is PostgreSQL?

The purpose of this post is to define exactly what PostgreSQL is and to set up future articles that will go into further detail. Is it PostgreSQL or Postgres? PostgreSQL is officially written as “PostgreSQL”. The standard pronunciation is "post-GRES-cue-ell" . Some choose to pronounce this as “postgres sequel”. Also, sometimes “Postgres” is used interchangeably with “PostgreSQL”. Confused? Let's delve into the history to clarify things. History of PostgreSQL The name “PostgreSQL” is derived from Ingres, a relational database developed by Michael Stonebraker. In 1986, Stonebraker initiated an upgrade to Ingres called POSTGRES (Post + Ingres) that added new features including object programming. In 1994, POSTGRES become an open-source project with an MIT license. In 1995, Andrew Yu and Jolly Chen replaced the POSTGRES internal query language named  QUEL with the nascent SQL language. After a brief name change to Postgre95, the project was rebranded as Postgre

First Chicago PUG Blog

Welcome to the Chicago PostgreSQL User Group (PUG) , a group dedicated to the utilization and promotion of the open-source database PostgreSQL . Chicago PUG is one of several worldwide regional user groups that host regular meetings [formerly in-person and currently virtual] with speakers presenting on topics related to PostgreSQL. These sessions are free and open to all. This is the first inaugural post of the official Chicago PUG blog. The purpose of PUG in general and this blog in particular is to educate participants about the various uses of PostgreSQL as a relational database. The blog will supplement and enhance the meetup site and webinars.
